On Strike

So today I was politically active. Very unusual for me...

All kinds of people who are employed by the Berlin senate (so also teachers like me, who aren't civil servants) went out into the streets to protests against the politicians' refusal to grant us benefits and raises in salaries they have promised us or which the law simply regulates. To elaborate on this a little: If I had started working in Hamburg I would have 800€ more in my account EVERY month. If we were granted the raise in salary (the senate is actually legally bound to) I would have about 700€ more a year. I don't want to get into complaining here because it's really not about the money (at least not for me...).

What bugs me and why I also went is that the politicians say that Berlin doesn't have any money for the people who educate the kids of this country and at the same time raise their own wages or waste - sorry - spend 12 mio (!)€ on ads and commercials for Berlin. Something about this is just wrong. I don't like the attitude behind that. Wrong focus.

So, even though I don't like demos, people waving flaggs, blowing whistles and giving polemic speeches, I think it was the right thing to go.
Honestly I don't think it will change anything (apart from me not getting paid for today) but at least it was a statement.
